Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME universal TLD is the single TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained online.
